Curriculum Intent

Outstanding Learning and Progress in a Secure and Happy Environment

INTENT

At Worth Primary School the children are at the heart of everything we do and our guiding ethos is to always put the children first.  We are dedicated to creating a safe, stimulating and happy learning environment for all of our children to thrive in.  We have a child centred approach to teaching and learning; prioritising individual needs and developing children to have a real love of learning and building strong foundations for their futures. Our teaching reflects the needs of the class and the individual but also provides challenge at an appropriate level. We use a variety of stimuli to motivate the children’s interests and capture their curiosity to further develop their knowledge and skills.  We promote the physical, social, emotional, spiritual and moral well-being of our pupils, placing great importance and emphasis on everyone having a positive and respectful attitude in our school. We celebrate our local community and provide opportunities to explore the diversity of the wider world. Our aim is for all our children to fulfil their full potential – academically, socially, emotionally and physically – and develop a lifelong love of learning.

IMPLEMENTATION

Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework. We use a mix of schemes with a topic-based approach for History, Geography, Art & Design and Design & Technology - making cross curricular links where appropriate. Core and some foundation subjects are also taught discretely to ensure full coverage as well as secure knowledge and understanding. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum to prepare children for the next stage or phase of their education as well ensure they are read for the opportunities and responsibilities of later life.

We have excellent outdoor facilities which we use to enrich the children’s learning; PE on the field/playground, a forest area for bug hunts in science or forest activities in Reception, artwork through drawing, painting or gathering natural materials for collage. We make use of our locality for enhancing the curriculum; visits to the local library or field trips to study local history and geography. We enrich the curriculum by organising class visits to bring experiences beyond the classroom such as visits to; Manchester Science Museum, Jodrell bank, Quarry Bank Mill, The Silk Museum, Weaver Hall, Tatton Hall, Lyme Park, Staircase House, East Lancashire Steam Railway. We bring exciting learning into the school through workshops such as, History workshops – Iron Age, Victorians, Science Workshops – Jodrell Bank Planetarium or visits from school theatre groups and local authors. We have close links with Poynton High School and children from Years 5 and 6 regularly attend events put on by them.

In addition, we also engage in whole school initiatives to excite the school community and encourage engagement with families. These include; Young Voices, Antibullying and Online Safety weeks, Science Week, European Day of languages, Harvest Festival where donations go to a local community food larder, Children in Need, Save the Children Christmas Jumper day, Odd Socks Day, Poynton Show Art Competitions.

IMPACT

Our children will leave us with a secure understanding of our curriculum content and they will be ready to embrace and enjoy the next step of their academic journey at High School. They will understand how to be a socially, spiritually and morally responsible citizen. They will embrace the diverse nature of the world and be aware of how they can make a positive contribution to their local and global community. We aim to ensure that our children leave Worth Primary School respectful, resilient and ambitious; with the motivation and passion to continue life long learning and with the courage to take on the many challenges that life has to offer.
