Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum Statement

At Worth Primary School, we believe that learning a modern foreign language is a vital part of preparing children to be members of a multi-cultural society. Our language lessons offer children a new perspective on the world and a deeper appreciation of other cultures. We aim to develop children’s ability to communicate confidently in Spanish, both orally and in writing, by giving them the building blocks of language learning. Our goal is to foster a life-long enthusiasm for languages and to equip pupils with a strong foundation of language skills that may inspire future opportunities to work or study abroad. Our commitment to languages is reflected in our achievement of the International Schools Award (2019), and our ongoing efforts to broaden pupils’ global awareness.

Spanish is taught throughout Key Stage 2 (KS2) in line with the National Curriculum. One confident language teacher delivers lessons across KS2, using the ‘La Jolie Ronde’ scheme and other resources to support progression. In Lower Key Stage 2, pupils focus on developing speaking and listening skills, while in Upper Key Stage 2, these are extended to include reading and writing. Lessons are rich in song, rhyme, storytelling and conversation, helping pupils to internalise key vocabulary and sounds in an enjoyable and memorable way. As they progress, pupils learn to form full sentences, understand basic grammar, and begin to read and write independently in Spanish.

Cultural understanding is developed through learning about daily life in Spanish-speaking countries and through our link with a partner school in Spain. This is supported by cross-curricular links with subjects such as Geography, History, Music and PE.

By the time children leave Worth Primary School, they will have gained the confidence to communicate in Spanish, understand key grammatical structures, recognise patterns between languages, and develop a curiosity about the wider world, well-prepared to continue language learning at secondary school.
