Design and Technology Curriculum Statement
At Worth Primary School, we teach Design and Technology to equip children with the creativity and practical skills needed in our rapidly changing world. We encourage pupils to think imaginatively and solve problems both independently and collaboratively. Our curriculum gives children opportunities to design and make products in a variety of meaningful contexts, making learning purposeful and motivating. Through a topic-based approach, children acquire a broad range of knowledge that connects mathematics, science, computing, and art. We also place strong emphasis on cooking skills, including food hygiene, nutrition, and healthy eating principles. Our aim is for children to appreciate the impact of Design and Technology on everyday life and develop into resourceful, enterprising individuals ready to contribute to future innovations.
Our teaching follows the National Curriculum and EYFS Framework, offering pupils chances to design and create solutions to real-world problems across home, school, community, and beyond. Lessons develop knowledge, understanding, and skills through a variety of creative and practical activities. Pupils learn to investigate and analyse existing products, evaluate their own ideas, and respond thoughtfully to feedback.
Design and Technology is taught through meaningful cross-curricular links with Geography, History, and Art & Design, reinforcing and extending children’s knowledge. Food technology lessons develop an understanding of where food comes from, the importance of a balanced diet, and practical skills in food preparation. Pupils work individually, in pairs, and in teams, building collaboration and communication skills.
By the time they leave Worth Primary School, children will have gained practical life skills such as cooking and food hygiene, alongside the creative and technical expertise to confidently tackle everyday challenges. They will be able to design and make high-quality products, evaluate their work effectively, and demonstrate resilience and innovation. Our Design and Technology curriculum aims to inspire a lasting enthusiasm for learning and creativity.
