Geography Curriculum Statement
At Worth Primary School, our geography curriculum is rooted in the spirit of exploration, discovery and environmental awareness. We aim to spark curiosity about the world and deepen children's understanding of its people, places and environments. Through studying continents, cultures and communities, children develop a secure sense of how physical and human processes shape the world around them. Geography at Worth is more than the study of locations—it is a journey of understanding how we live, how we connect, and how we care for the planet.
Children are encouraged to investigate their immediate surroundings before extending their understanding to national and global scales. This progression begins in the Early Years through the Understanding the World strand and builds throughout the school to ensure pupils gain knowledge that is rich, layered and relevant. Learning is broken down into carefully sequenced steps so children develop both the knowledge and disciplinary thinking needed to become geographers.
We equip pupils with the skills to observe, question, compare and analyse. Fieldwork and practical investigations play a vital role in our curriculum, allowing children to experience geography first-hand and connect with their learning in meaningful ways. A topic-based approach creates purposeful links with subjects such as history, art and design, and design technology, making geography vivid and memorable. Through a wide range of resources and activities, children build a secure understanding of locational knowledge, geographical processes, mapwork and data analysis.
Throughout all units, pupils are taught that geography is a dynamic subject—shaped by changing landscapes, cultures and viewpoints. Alongside this, they are encouraged to develop an environmental conscience, recognising the responsibility we all share in protecting the Earth. Our curriculum instils an awareness of environmental challenges, such as climate change, sustainability, and human impact, and provides opportunities for pupils to reflect on how they can contribute positively to the future of the planet.
By the time they leave Worth Primary School, children will be confident and inquisitive geographers who think critically about the world, understand their place within it, and are motivated to explore it further. They will have developed the skills to gather, interpret and communicate geographical information, and the knowledge to appreciate both the diversity and fragility of the world they live in.
