Music Curriculum Statement

At Worth Primary School, we aim to provide an inclusive and engaging music education that fosters creativity, self-expression, and enjoyment. Our curriculum inspires children to develop a lifelong love of music by exposing them to a wide range of musical styles, traditions, and cultures. Music supports emotional development, builds confidence, and encourages collaboration, enabling pupils to express themselves while developing essential life skills such as perseverance and discipline.

Children learn to perform, compose, listen to, and analyse music. They develop their understanding of musical elements, vocabulary, and notation through singing, instrumental work, and creative composition. These skills are embedded through classroom lessons, assemblies, and performances, giving pupils regular opportunities to build their confidence as musicians.

We use the Charanga scheme to ensure progression and breadth, from Early Years through to Year 6. In the EYFS, pupils explore instruments and build early musicianship through daily songs and rhymes. In KS2, children learn to play tuned and untuned instruments and develop composition skills. In Year 4, all pupils participate in the Wider Opportunities scheme, learning violin or cello with specialist teachers. Some pupils choose to continue lessons beyond this as part of a continuation programme.

Music is also celebrated through whole-school performances and events, such as choir club and participation in the ‘Young Voices’ concert. This supports children in sharing their musical learning with others and recognising the joy and value of collective music-making.

By the time they leave Worth Primary School, our pupils will be confident, reflective musicians. They will have experienced a broad musical education, developed an appreciation for the diversity of music, and be able to express informed opinions about what they hear and perform. Above all, they will leave with a sense of achievement, pride in their creativity, and the enthusiasm to continue their musical journey.
