Curriculum Intent

Outstanding Learning and Progress in a Secure and Happy Environment

At Worth Primary School, children are at the heart of everything we do.

Our guiding ethos is simple: always put the children first. We are committed to creating a safe, stimulating and happy learning environment where all children can thrive. Through our child-centred approach to teaching and learning, we prioritise individual needs, nurture a love of learning, and lay strong foundations for the future.

Our curriculum is underpinned by a clear vision: it should be rich, diverse, well-structured and progressive. It aims to inspire and challenge all learners, build resilience, and open up new experiences—giving children the confidence to tackle challenges with curiosity and determination. We celebrate each child’s heritage while embracing the diverse world they live in.

A Curriculum That Inspires

We follow the National Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework, using a blended approach that combines both discrete and thematic teaching. We’ve moved from a fully thematic model to this hybrid in response to pupil voice, staff feedback, and parental support—recognising that this model best meets the needs and preferences of our school community.

Our curriculum is guided by two whole-school cross-curricular themes—our ‘Golden Threads’:

  • Exploration & Discovery
  • Environmental Awareness

These threads run across subjects and year groups, connecting learning and reinforcing key concepts. Where appropriate, we use discrete schemes of work that align with and enhance these themes.

Our teaching reflects the unique needs of each class and child, while providing appropriate challenge and opportunity for growth. We use a range of stimuli to spark interest, deepen knowledge, and develop essential skills.

Developing the Whole Child

We believe education goes beyond academics. We promote physical, social, emotional, spiritual, and moral development, placing high value on positive attitudes and respectful relationships. We celebrate our local community while also encouraging children to explore and appreciate the wider world.

We want all children to reach their full potential—academically, socially, emotionally and physically—and to develop a true love of learning that lasts a lifetime.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

We make the most of our excellent outdoor facilities, including:

  • PE on the field and playground
  • Forest School activities
  • Art using natural materials

We also make full use of our local environment, with trips to the library and field studies in local history and geography.

Our curriculum is enriched by class visits to exciting destinations such as:

  • Manchester Science Museum
  • Runway Museum
  • The Silk Museum
  • Tatton Hall, Staircase House, and more

In-school workshops further enhance learning with experiences such as:

  • History days (e.g. Tudors, Victorians)
  • Science and Technology activities (e.g. Dan Tastic, Toy Workshops)
  • Cultural workshops (Manchester Chinese Centre)
  • Theatre performances and author visits

We also have strong links with Poynton High School, providing transition opportunities and enrichment events for our Year 5 and 6 pupils.

Community and Whole-School Events

We engage our wider school community through events and initiatives that promote values, creativity and citizenship, including:

  • Young Voices
  • Science Week
  • Anti-Bullying and Online Safety Weeks
  • European Day of Languages
  • Harvest Festival (supporting our local food larder)
  • Children in Need, Save the Children Christmas Jumper Day, Odd Socks Day
  • Poynton Show Art Competitions

Preparing for the Future

By the time they leave Worth Primary School, our children are respectful, resilient and ambitious learners. They will be ready for high school with a strong grasp of the curriculum, and the confidence to take on life’s challenges.

They will understand how to contribute positively to their communities—both local and global—armed with compassion, curiosity, and a belief in their ability to make a difference. They will leave us with a lifelong love of learning and the courage to embrace whatever lies ahead.
