Rainforests

Our unit for Summer 1 links to our topic of Rainforests. During this unit we will:

  • Create animal fact files and information texts about the rainforest.
  • Produce a 'Save the Rainforest' campaign poster.
  • Research and compare rainforest and western lifestyles.
  • Write a diary entry about a day in the rainforest.
  • Identify short story conventions and summarise traditional Brazilian folk tales.
  • Plan and write a short rainforest story.
  • Write a rainforest animal poem, maintaining rhythm and rhyme where appropriate.
  • Write a persuasive letter to logging companies - linked to the Great Kapok Tree.

We will be using several fiction and non-fiction books to help us, including our class read 'The Explorer' by Katherine Rundell.

Reading Books

Dragons

Our unit for Spring 1 is Dragons. During our study of these creatures from myths and legends we will:

  • Create a class guide book about dragons
  • Write a diary entry from the point of view of a chosen character
  • Produce an explanation text about Lunar New Year
  • Create a playscript for two or more characters
  • Write a free-verse dragon poem

We are referring to several books to inspire us. This includes our class read which is

'How to Train Your Dragon' by Cressida Cowell

Science Fiction

Our unit for Autumn 2 is Science Fiction. During our study of the genre we will:

  • Identify common settings, characters and plots found in science fiction stories

  • Write a description of own science fiction setting

  • Write extended science fiction character profiles

  • Research and make notes about a chosen technology

  • Plan, write, proof-read and edit a science fiction story

  • Gather ideas for a collection of similes

  • Plan and write a science fiction poem

 

We will be reading several books and researching online to help us develop our ideas. Our class read is Space Pirates and Other Sci-fi Stories By Tony Bradman.

Reading Books

Robin Hood

Our unit for Autumn 1 is Robin Hood. Within our study of this famous legend we will be:

  • Identifying key characters and main themes
  • Finding meanings of new vocabulary
  • Producing character studies in the form of WANTED posters
  • Writing persuasive arguments for a chosen character
  • Composing a ballad that has rhyme and rhythm

 

We are referring to several books to help us with our research and we will be enjoying our class read: Robin Hood Aged 10¾ by Ben Miller
