English Curriculum Statement

At Worth Primary School, we believe that English is the foundation of all learning. Our aim is to equip every child with the essential skills to communicate confidently, read fluently and write with purpose and accuracy. Through a rich and engaging English curriculum, we ensure that pupils develop a lifelong love of reading, the ability to express themselves clearly and creatively, and the tools to access learning across all subjects.

Children are taught to read with ease and understanding so that they can both enjoy literature and use reading as a key to unlocking the wider curriculum. They are immersed in a wide variety of high-quality texts, fostering a love of stories, information and language. Writing is taught as a craft, enabling pupils to write effectively for a range of purposes and audiences, with a strong focus on spelling, grammar, vocabulary and presentation. Oracy is equally valued, with pupils developing confidence in speaking and listening through discussion, performance and formal presentation.

From the earliest stages, children receive daily phonics instruction through the Rising Stars Rocket Phonics programme. As they progress, this foundation is built upon through the systematic teaching of spelling, punctuation and grammar. Writing is often meaningfully linked to other areas of the curriculum, providing context and purpose, and each pupil maintains an Independent Writing book that follows them throughout their time at Worth, showcasing progress and achievement.

Reading is central to our school culture. Class libraries and the school library are well-stocked with a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, and children are encouraged to read widely for both pleasure and learning. Teachers model and teach key reading skills, including decoding and comprehension, and actively promote reading for enjoyment.

By the time they leave Worth Primary School, our pupils are fluent, confident readers and writers who can communicate effectively and creatively. They have a secure grasp of the conventions of English and the confidence to apply these in a range of contexts. Most importantly, they leave us with a love of language and literature, fully prepared to succeed in the next stage of their education and beyond.
